Memories of the Himalaya is pleased to announce that the digitization of the Corneille Jest 1960-61 photographic collection has begun thanks to exceptional funding.
It is a corpus of more than 4,000 photographs taken in the Kathmandu Valley and in Dolpo (mainly Tarap) during his first mission in Nepal, between August 1960 and October 1961. This documentation, largely unpublished, especially for Dolpo, is of major interest for scientific research and offers an exceptional visual testimony of the environment and the daily life of its inhabitants.
The corpus is composed of nearly 3,000 B&W and color negatives (6×6 and 24×36) as well as about 1,200 slides (Kodachrome). A work of reorganization of the slides is carried out in parallel.
Subsequently, the work of geolocating and indexing the images will be carried out in order to put this corpus online.
